US Rowing SafeSport requirements for Hillsborough High School Rowing Club Rowers, Parents, and Volunteers

 

The USRowing SafeSport program addresses six areas of misconduct: sexual misconduct (including child sexual abuse and/or grooming behaviors), emotional misconduct, physical misconduct, bullying, hazing, and harassment.

To protect athletes and all members of the USRowing community, part-time and full-time coaches/trainers, members of the Board of Directors, and volunteers with direct access/interactions with athletes are required to undergo criminal background checks, receive education and training, and be familiar with the USRowing SafeSport reporting, investigation, and hearing process.

Student-Athletes:

At the beginning of each year, all Hillsborough High School Rowing Club requires student-athletes under 18 complete the free SafeSport for Youth Athletes. Student-athletes turning 18 during the race seasons are required to complete the free SafeSport Adult Athlete course. Course completion information can be found below: Rowers are to complete the SafeSport training by the first day of practice, August 10, 2023.

NEW STUDENT-ATHLETES:

  • Please go to https://safesporttrained.org/
  • When registering, select Enrollment Key on the landing page and enter the following key: NGBUSR-RFKt8f
  • Please have your rower create an account (please list your organization/club as ‘Hillsborough High School Rowing Club’ at the bottom of registration).
  • Rowers will include their MembershipID, which is your USRowing member number (you would have received this when completing the USRowing Membership/Waiver).
  • Once registered, you can access “Catalog” on the SafeSport Trained homepage, and you will see options for available courses. Your rower will need to complete “SafeSport for Youth Athletes”. Please note this course name may change without any notification to the club. If you do not see this course title, please reach out to the club.
  • Rowers will select SafeSport for Youth Athletes course to “Enroll” from the list of options. Your rower may then “Start” the course. The high school course focuses on bullying and hazing prevention, supporting friends who have experienced abuse or inappropriate conduct, and resources for reporting abuse or misconduct. This course will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
  • Rowers who turn 18 during the racing seasons: Upon a rower's 18th birthday, an additional SafeSport training is required to be completed. Per USRowing 2023 SafeSport Policy, any member of USRowing who is a Relevant Adult Participant is required to complete the 90-minute SafeSport Trained course or one of its refreshers as applicable. 18 year old Student-Athletes will need to complete the 90-minute SafeSport Trained course to be compliant.   • Upon completion of the course, you will receive a PDF certificate of completion. Please forward the certificate or screenshot of the certificate to hhsrowingclub@gmail.com.

RETURNING STUDENT-ATHLETES:

  • Student-Athletes who are 18 are required to complete the 90-minute SafeSport Trained course or one of it’s refreshers as applicable. 18 year old Student-Athletes will need to complete the 90-minute SafeSport Trained course to be compliant. For more information, check out USRowing website.

Coaches, HHSRC Board Members, and Volunteers in Direct Contact with Student-athletes Requirements

All coaches, volunteers in direct contact with student-athletes, and HHSRC Board Members complete a City of Tampa background check and are required to be Safe Sport certified. This is a 90-minute course. This Safe Sport course teaches about the nature of misconduct in sports and provides actionable information to better protect athletes.

Directions for New HHSRC Board Members and Volunteers in Direct Contact with Student-athletes: For the club to be SafeSport compliant, all new coaches, trainers, BOD members, and volunteers with direct access to athletes must complete a 90-minute course. You can complete the course in multiple sittings.

  1. The first thing needed for registration is to complete a profile on Regatta Central https://www.regattacentral.com/v3/signup. Your email address must be different from the one your child used for their Regatta Central and USRowing profiles.
  2. After that, sign up here  https://safesporttrained.org/
  3. When registering, select Enrollment Key on the landing page and enter the following key: NGBUSR-RFKt8f
  4. Please create an account (please list your organization/club as 'Hillsborough High School Rowing Club' at the bottom of registration).
  5. Once registered, you can access "Catalog" on the SafeSport Trained homepage and see options for available courses.
  6. Select the course 'SafeSport Trained Core NGB1' Curriculum. This course name may change, please contact the club if you are unsure of the course name.
  7. Upon completion, you will receive a PDF certificate of completion. Please forward the certificate of completion to .
  8. Every year thereafter, a 30-minute refresher course should be completed.
Certificate Renewals: All returning coaches, trainers, BOD members must complete a yearly refresher course, which should appear in your SafeSport account. Please do not hesitate to email the club if you encounter any obstacles or have questions.

Parents:

Designed for the parents of athletes of all ages, this course explains the issues of misconduct in sports and helps parents ensure their children have a positive and safe experience.
